Scarborough Board of Education Safe Schools Policy

The Safe Schools Policy on Violence and Weapons was approved by the Scarborough Board of Education on November 1 1993, effective December 1, 1993.

VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR

1. Students involved in fighting, threatening or verbally abusing other students shall be suspended. The length of the suspension will depend on the severity of the incident and the degree of involvement of the individual student. The police may be involved, at the discretion of the principal.

2. Where the abuse is deemed to constitute an attack by one or more students on another, whether provoked or unprovoked, the police shall be involved and the minimum length of suspension shall be 5 days.

3. Students who, in the absence of mitigating circumstances, assault another person to the extent that a serious injury requiring medical intervention ensues, shall be recommended for expulsion and police shall be involved.

4. Where the offence involves sexually assaultive behaviour, the students shall be suspended for a minimum of 10 days and the police shall be involved. Any longer suspensions shall be determined in consultation with the Superintendent of Student and Community Services. Students suspended for sexually assaultive behaviour shall be considered for transfer to a different school following the expiration of their suspensions.

5. Students who threaten, harass, or verbally abuse a member of the teaching or business and operations staff shall be suspended and the police may be involved. The length of the suspension will depend on the severity and circumstances of the incident.

6. Students who physically or sexually assault a member of the teaching or business and operations staff shall be suspended for a minimum of 10 days and the police shall be involved, unless there are mitigating circumstances. The length of suspension shall be determined in consultation with the Superintendent of Student and Community Services. Students who physically or sexually assault a member of the teaching or business and operations staff shall be considered for transfer to a different school following the expiration of their suspension.

WEAPONS

7. (a) Students who are found in possession of a nonprohibited weapon shall be suspended for a minimum of 10 days. (b) Students who are found in possession of a nonprohibited weapon on a second occasion shall be recommended for expulsion.

8. Students who are found in possession of a prohibited weapon, a firearm or a replica of a firearm shall be recommended for expulsion and the police shall be involved.

9. Students who use any weapon or a replica of a weapon in an assault, or who use any weapon or a replica in a threatening manner shall be recommended for explusion and the police shall be involved.
