School Policies as of the 1999-2000 schoolyear:

Moratorium Policy

Moratorium Week begins one 4-day cycle prior to the beginning of examinations in the first two terms.

Specifics of Moratorium Week:

No special events, assemblies or excursions are allowed. Any request for exemption from this policy is to be taken to the Department Heads and Administration for approval.

No term tests can be scheduled within the last four days prior to the start of exams with the following exceptions:

  • the test is voluntary for the students
  • the test cannot lower a student's term mark

Student Examination Rules

  • Students who have conflicts, i.e. two or more exams written at the same time or 3 or more being written on one day, should report to the Guidance Office at least one week prior to exams.
  • Students must be in the examination room at least 10 minutes before the examination. Examinations begin at 9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. Be sure to check the schedule.
  • Every student has the responsibility to arrive at the examination at the correct time. No examination will be written at any time other than the time indicated on the official examination schedule.
  • A student who misses any examination due to illness, within one week of the date of illness, must present a medical certificate to the Attendance Secretary. A student who misses an examination in the first or second term will be required to write the third term examination in that subject.
  • Students must come to the examination room equipped with pencils, ruler, pen and such mathematical instruments as may be needed. Scientific calculators with extended memory are not acceptable.
  • Before the distribution of the question papers, students must place all texts, notebooks and other such materials along the walls as directed by the teacher in charge.
  • Students may leave the examination room only after 1 hour (for a 1 1/2 hour exam) or 1 1/2 hours (for a 2 hour exam) have elapsed. A number of students are writing examinations in a conflict room situation and an early dismissal of other students would jeopardize the security of their exams. Students must leave the hallways promptly upon excusal/dismissal.
  • Answer papers must be handed in to the teacher, but not before the end of the time allowed for that particular examination.
  • Examination answer papers will be confiscated and the office notified if a student communicates with another student, or uses any unauthorized material on his/her desk or person. Presiding teacher must call the office and have the office duty teacher, or principal or vice-principal come immediately to the examination room if any student appears to be cheating. If the allegations of cheating are accurate, the exam mark will be zero. Such student will also receive a suspension.
  • The Resource Centre will be open during examination week from 8:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. for quiet study only.
  • The cafeteria is open from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Students who wish to study in the cafeteria must remain there for the full examination period.
  • In order to ensure the quietest possible conditions, no students will be permitted to be in the halls where examinations are being written.
  • Students may stay at home to study on those days or part days for which they have no examination scheduled.

School Policies for Examinations Not Written

Illness

If a student misses one or more exams due to illness, the following procedures will apply:

  • A parent or guardian of the student will notify the school, usually by telephone, of the illness prior to the start of examinations or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Within 5 school days of the date of illness, the student must bring a medical certificate to the Attendance Office. The certificate should indicate the duration of the illness.
  • The attendance secretary will add the student's name to the list of exemptions due to illness for those examinations covered by the medical certificate.

Reasons Other Than Illness

If parents intend to withdraw a student from school for one or more examinations due to special family circumstances, they should contact a member of the administration to discuss the consequences.

PLEASE NOTE: If a student is unable to write a term 1 or term 2 examination, then the term 3 examination in that subject must be written.
