School Policies as of the 1999-2000 schoolyear:

Code of Conduct

Macdonald Collegiate has long enjoyed a reputation for safety and security. We intend to maintain these standards. Macdonald Collegiate is operated on the presumption that all students are entitled to the fullest opportunities to gain an education, and that no person will be permitted to hinder the rights of others.

Duties and Rights of Students

All school rules are derived from two assertions:

  • The school has a right to expect students to attend school regularly and punctually, and to arrive fully equipped and prepared for the day's work.
  • The student has a right to expect that textbooks, equipment, and course outlines will be provided, and that classes will be challenging and well-prepared by teachers, and that evaluation will be done fairly, promptly and in accordance with course descriptions as well as school policies.

Inappropriate/Illegal Behaviour

The following are school and Board of Education policies:

Student involvement in fighting, threatening, verbal abuse, harassment (racial, sexual or other), swearing, gambling, persistent truancy or opposition to authority will result in a parental interview and/or suspension. The police may also be involved, and charges may be laid.

Student involvement in vandalism, extortion, theft, assault, drugs, alcohol, weapons (or replicas of weapons), or misuse of fire alarms or other safety equipment so as to endanger others will result in parental interview, suspension and police contact. Restitution may be required in some cases and counselling may be required upon readmittance.

Smoking

In keeping with the policy of the Scarborough Board of Education, there shall be no smoking anywhere on the property of Sir John A. Macdonald C.I. Violators may be suspended from school.

Parking

Students must park in the white lined area. Yellow lined areas are for the exclusive use of the staff. Do not park in the fire routes or your car will be tagged or towed. Students must purchase and display, at all times, their annual parking permit.

The circular driveway at the front of the school is intended for short interval stopping, for drop-offs and pick-ups only. Because it is a fire route, students who park cars there, or those who are judged responsible for the parked cars of visitors, will have school parking privileges withdrawn and may be suspended from school.

Electronic Pagers/Portable Telephones

These are illegal in all Scarborough schools. Violators will be suspended.

Security

Gym changing rooms are not necessarily locked at all times. Under no circumstances should money or valuables be left in these areas.

The doors to the technical wing and at the north-west corner of the school will be locked each morning at 10:30 a.m. Only individuals with official school business are welcome. Macdonald Collegiate has zero tolerance for trespassers. Macdonald students judged responsible for uninvited visitors are liable to suspension from school.

Similarly, Macdonald students are not to enter other schools except when officially representing our school on teams or clubs. Even then, Macdonald students must behave responsibly and appropriately. Otherwise they are liable to suspension from school and a trespassing charge.

Visitors

All visitors must report to the main office and identify themselves and their reason for visiting. Social visits by friends and/or relatives during the school day are not allowed. Trespassers will be reported to the police.

Lockers

All students will be registered into a locker. Any changes must have permission from the office. Students should never leave money or valuables in their lockers, nor disclose their combinations to others. We accept no responsibility for losses if students disregard these policies.
