School Policies as of the 1999-2000 schoolyear:

Attendance Policies

Regular attendance in classes is the responsibility of students. Irregular attendance and lateness disrupt the learning process and hinder evaluation. Therefore, a student exhibiting irregular attendance and/or significant lateness should expect follow-up such as phone calls to the home, in-school suspensions, formal suspensions, etc. Appointments with teachers due to student lateness, misbehaviour or incomplete work have priority over extra-curricular activities and after-school jobs.

All students are issued a Student Photo Identification Card. This card is to be carried at all times, and presented for service in the Attendance Office (signing in or out), Guidance, Library and at dances and other events. If this card is lost, it may be replaced in Guidance at a cost of $5.00.

Absence

Please notify the school about absences by 10:00 a.m. on the answering machine: 396-6799. Remember to leave student name, student number, length of absence and reason. A note from home must be presented in the Attendance Office upon the student's return.

FOR EXTENDED ABSENCES (over 5 consecutive school days) due to illness:

A doctor's certificate will be required. To withdraw a student from school for reasons other than health, a parent must complete the form available in the main office. The student is responsible for any work missed.

Lateness

Classes are to begin exactly 5 minutes after the bell that ends the previous class. A student who is not in class when the class begins is considered late. Students who are late for school (that is, arrive any time after 9:00) must report to the Attendance Office. (See chart on next page.) Between 8:50 and 9:00, lateness will be recorded directly in homeform.

Leaving School Early

Students who wish to leave the school before the end of classes must sign out in the Attendance Office whether they have a note from home, or not. If there is no note, a parent will be telephoned for permission. If the parent is unavailable, permission will be needed from administration.

Notes

A note is required to explain any absence from class. The note must be dated and signed by the parent. Students 18 years and over may sign their own notes, while providing their student card which indicates their birth date.

Excursions

Students who are on excursions, or teams, are marked absent from class, and attendance is checked by the supervising teachers. Students are responsible for returning the Excursion Permission Form to the supervising teacher prior to the day of the excursion and catching up on any work missed.
