About Guidance

The Macdonald C.I. Guidance Department provides a broad range of programs and services for students. Counsellors may assist students with program planning, career choices, post-secondary planning and personal issues.

In addition, a social worker and a psychologist are available to help with more serious concerns. To access our social worker or psychologist, students and parents should first speak with a counsellor who will facilitate a referral.

Guidance Staff:

  • Mrs. Gillespie (Head) A-G
  • Miss. T. Zappone H-Ma
  • Mrs. D. Harvey Mc-Sh
  • Ms. Daley Si-Z
  • Mrs. C. Watters (Secretary)

Computerized Career Services and In-Class Career Instruction:

Our web site provides access to career and post-secondary information (check out our links). Career interest and ability tests are given to all students during their grade 10 Careers Course. Additional testing is available on request. It is the responsibility of all students to take advantage of these opportunities and to seek answers to their questions as they undertake their personal career exploration.

Making a Guidance Appointment

Counsellors are assigned by alphabet and appointments may be arranged in the Guidance office. Parents are welcome to make inquiries.

If you wish to see a counsellor, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Write your name on an appointment slip for the counsellor assigned to you. The secretary or a counsellor will book an appointment for you at the earliest possible date.
  2. Keep this slip with you and show it to your subject teacher. After your meeting with your counsellor, ensure that the slip is completed and initialed by the counsellor, showing time when the meeting ended. You will need this to be re-admitted in class.

Parents who wish to see a counsellor are asked to call our Secretary, Mrs. Watters, at (416) 396-6793 Ext. 20041 to arrange an appointment.

The guidance department is open from 8:15 to 4:00 p.m.

Admission Information

All students who reside within our school district (Hwy 401, Hwy 404, Ernest, Finch, Warden) are automactically accepted for admission to our school for September 2008.

All other students who live outside of the area are encouraged to apply, but they will have their acceptance status determined by a lottery in the first week in February. Priority status will be given first to applicants who have a sibling currently attending Macdonald and who will be attending next year.

Applications for grade 8 students will be available from their Guidance Counsellor at their school. All other students should contact our Guidance office (396-6793) beginning in January. All applications must be submitted to our school by February 1st. Students accepted to Macdonald must confirm their status by March 1st. A waiting list will be created at the time of the lottery.

This policy applies to all students applying to Macdonald for September 2008 (Grade 9 - 12).
