Minutes of October 9th, 2003

Welcome and Introductions:
Christine welcomed all participants to the meeting and invited everyone to introduce himself or herself.. Ruth Ann Whipp welcomed parents of grade nine students and introduced the new vice-principles, Dave Rowan, former head of geography, and Patrick Abtan, formerly at Georges Vanier Secondary School.

Christine presented an overview of the school council activities and functions.

- Principal’s Report:
5.1. Thank you to Christine Bell for her work as Chair for the past few year.
5.2. Thank you and presentation to Ron McNaughton, who will not be running in the next election.
5.3. Ruth Ann shared the sad news that Barb Bremner passed away from lung cancer. Barb was instrumental in commencement preparations in years past. She will be greatly missed. There are plans underway to establish a scholarship in Barb’s name.
5.4. Staffing & enrolment:
There are currently 1,398 student enrolled at MAC, with 270 students in grade nine. Two new teachers have been hired: one fulltime science, Sharon Small and one science/ mathematics teacher, TBA. Optional attendance is only available to grad nine students and is determined by lottery.
The average class size is officially set at 25 students per class; at MAC there are grade nine and ten classes with 35-39 students. Attempts are being made to rebalance class sizes.
Scarborough and Etobicoke have signed on to Trillium, the new computer system used by the TDSB. Student information is being updated.
5.5. MAC has reorganized from department heads to curriculum leaders and assistant leaders.
5.6. Budget:
$50,000 budget cut: previously schools were allotted $180 / pupil, this has been reduced to $175 / pupil, in addition to the drop in enrolment has resulted in a $50,00- budget cut.
5.7. EQAO grade ten literacy testing is scheduled for Wed Oct 23 and Thurs Oct 24. 55o students will be writing the test. There will be late starts on Wed Oct 15th, teacher preparation.
